Lowest-order Whispering Gallery Mode:
Single cell cavity fromed in a 2-D square-lattice photonic crystal allows for the existence of the whispering gallery mode with a lowest azimuthal mode number of 2.
Nondegenerate Monopole Mode:
To realize the ultimate zero threshold laser, the size of the cavity should be an order of wavelength and the quality factor of the optical cavity should be high. Then, the best choice is the cavity allowing just one single mode.
Very-low threshold Photonic Band-edge Lasers:
We report a photonic band-edge laser formed in a free-stading photonic crystal slab, which shows a very low threshold of 35 uW (incident pump power).
Photonic Crystal Ring Laser:
We propose and demonstrate a 2-D photonic crystal laser based on the hexagonal waveguide ring resonator. By comparing the resonant peaks with the dispersion curve of the linear photonic crystal waveguide, average spectral separation between resonance peaks can be explained by the simple resonant condition.
